How to Link PAN Card with Aadhaar Card Online or Offline

Table of Contents

The key details first - if you’re not income tax exempt, (meaning you make more than ₹7 lakh per year) then it is mandatory to link your Aadhaar with your PAN account before the 31st of March 2023. In this article, we cover the ways in which you can link your Aadhaar and PAN. Do note that there are fines imposed if you don’t do this before the deadline.

What happens if you do not link your PAN with your Aadhaar by March 31, 2023?

The short answer - your PAN account will be deactivated. As you might be aware, the Finance Minister announced on February 1st 2023 that PAN will be considered as a valid identifier for KYC documentation.

How to link your PAN card with your Aadhaar card

There are three different ways in which you can link your PAN card and Aadhaar.

Option 1: Income tax e-filing portal

Step 1: Visit the income tax e-filing portal at the following link: E-Filing

Step 2: Register on the portal if you have not already done this. Your user ID will be your 10-digit PAN number.

Step 3: Then, log into your account by entering your user ID, password and your date of birth.

Step 4: You will then see a pop-up window that prompts you to link your PAN with Aadhaar. You can proceed using the link in this window. If this window does not show up on the screen, you can select the ‘Profile Settings’ option on the menu bar and click the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option. In case you’re trying to complete this from your phone, we’d recommend you try this out from a desktop.

Step 5: You will find that your personal details like name, date of birth, gender etc. are already pre-filled based on the details in your PAN. In case they are not filled in, you need to enter these details.

Step 6: Then, check if your PAN details match the information on your Aadhaar before proceeding. In case of a mismatch, you will have to get the details on the PAN or the Aadhaar corrected to match the other document.

Step 7: After ensuring that the details on your Aadhaar and PAN match, enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and click on the ‘Link Now’ prompt.

Step 8: Once your Aadhaar has been linked to your PAN successfully, you will see a pop-up message to confirm it.

Option 2: Link via SMS

If you want to get your Aadhaar-PAN linking done quickly, you can simply send an SMS in the specified format to either of the following two PAN service providers:

  • UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL)
  • NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited

The SMS should be sent to 567678 or 56161 in the following format: UIDPAN<12 digit Aadhaar><10 digit PAN>

For example, if your Aadhaar is 111122223333 and your PAN is AAAPA1234Q, then you need to send the an SMS that will look something like this:

UIDPAN 111122223333 AAAPA1234Q

Option 3: Linking PAN and Aadhaar manually

You can also visit the service centre of any of the two PAN service providers, namely NSDL or UTIITSL, to get the linking process done. Once there, here is what you need to do.

Step 1: Ask for the ‘Annexure-I’ form at the service centre.

Step 2:  Fill in the form completely. Make sure the details are correct.

Step 3: Submit the duly filled form along with the supporting documents that are required, such as a copy of your PAN card and your Aadhaar card.

Step 4: You then need to pay the prescribed fee at the service center since offline linking of Aadhaar and PAN is not free of charge. The fee is ₹110 if you need to correct any details in your PAN and ₹50 if you need to correct any details in your Aadhaar.

Step 5: Once you pay the fees, your service request will be processed and your PAN and Aadhaar will be linked.
