Summary

What’s Inside

Like many other professionals and business owners, you may also need to register on the GST portal to avail of services like online payments, filing GST returns, creating e-invoices or challans, accessing the e-way bill portal, and much more. After applying, you may also be required to track your GST application. This could help in case of any unwarranted delays or mismatches in your application form.

Fortunately, checking and tracking your GST application status is quite simple and almost entirely paperless. This blog takes you through the entire process of GST application status tracking and what each of the statuses means for your application.

How to track your GST application status?

Typically, it takes 15 working days to process an application (complete and accurate in all aspects). There are two ways of tracking your GST application, and we will discuss both of them.

Upon applying for a GST login ID, you will receive an Application Reference Number (ARN). Keep it handy, as it is vital for tracking your GST application.

Track your GST application status without logging in to the portal

This is the most common approach for tracking the GST application, as new users cannot access the portal until they receive a login ID and a temporary password. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Go to the GST portal home page
  2. Locate ‘Services’ on the main menu bar
  3. In the sub-menu that opens up, click on ‘Track Application Status
  4. You will see a drop-down list with two options; select ‘Registration’ in it
  5. In the module that now opens up, you will need to enter the ARN that you received after submitting your application
  6. Click on ‘Search’ to find the status of your application

Track your GST application status after logging in to the portal

In some instances, such as cancelling an existing GST account or making amendments, you will likely have a valid login ID. Therefore, you can log into the portal and track your GST application. Here’s how you can do so:

  1. Visit the GST portal home page and log into your account
  2. You will be taken to your account dashboard, which is the default screen
  3. In the menu, find ‘Services’ and click on it
  4. Under Services, you will see the option ‘Track Application Status’; click on it
  5. The application status module will ask you to choose between ‘Refunds’ and ‘Registration. Opt for the latter
  6. In the next window, you can check the status of your application using your ARN, a Submission Request Number (SRN), or even the request submission date

Common GST Application Statuses

In either of the two options above, after completing the final step, you will be shown the status of your application. This is displayed in a detailed ‘case history’ screen that colour codes your application's stage. It further shows all the pertinent information regarding your application and its current status, based on which you may be required to take follow-up action. These are some of the options you’re likely to see:

Approved

This means the tax officer approves your application, and your Registration ID and password have been emailed to you.

Rejected

This status appears when a tax officer rejects your application and may mention the reasons for the rejection.

Pending for Processing

This status is displayed immediately after your application is successfully submitted and in the queue for processing by the department.

Pending for Clarification

This status will appear if any mismatches or clarifications are needed in your application.

Conclusion

The facility to track your GST application helps you keep a tab on its status, check for any clarifications that the tax officer may seek, take necessary actions, and avoid overall delays that can strain your business finances.
